Bridging Gaps: Creating Accessible Solutions

How it all started

Our journey began with a shared frustration and a bit of courage. As friends, both Deaf women who can speak and sign, we repeatedly ran into products and services that weren't accessible to us.

An Asian-American woman in her 30's wearing a black leather jacket and smiling at the camera.

We knew what it felt like to be left out, and we decided we weren't going to pay for products that didn't work for us.

Our frustration led to an idea.

We realized we weren't alone - lots of people with different disabilities feel the same way.

This shared feeling became our motivation to make a change.
It inspired us to create something that didn't just include us, but anyone who has ever felt ignored.

So, with our shared experiences and determination, we started this venture to bring a fresh perspective on accessibility and our expertise in disability to companies and organizations.

Presenting in ASL at a Research Symposium

I have advocated for people with disabilities through legislative advocacy work and grassroots in NY, PA and MA.

I was one of the first deaf interns at the New York State Assembly, which lit my passion to begin advocating for people with disabilities.

I graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a BS and MS in Science, Technology and Public Policy.

Through my various professional work, I have consulted with businesses regarding accessibility.

My deep understanding of how culture, society, and policy interact with technology, particularly individuals with disabilities, positions me uniquely to provide insights into building inclusive and accessible environments powered by technology.

Valerie Horn

Sheila Xu

I'm a passionate advocate for accessibility and inclusion in our world. I hold the unique honor of being the first deaf Asian female pilot in history, a testament to my belief that barriers are there to be broken.

I see technology as a powerful tool for equity when designed with inclusivity and ethics at its core. Like Valerie, I have also consulted with businesses and organizations regarding accessibility.

I bring this belief to my studies at Harvard University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where I'm working towards dual degrees in Public Policy and Business Administration.

With the foundations from my MIT undergraduate education in Science, Technology, and Society, I'm eager to continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible in technology, policy, and business.

Consequences of Overlooking Disability

A case study example:

A tech company created a unique voice-controlled smart home system. It could manage lights, temperature, and security. The problem was it didn't consider people who are Deaf or hard of hearing (DHH).

The product worked only with voice commands. There were no other ways to control it. This made it unusable for people who don't hear or speak.

Clara, a potential customer, who was deaf, was thrilled about the idea of a smart home system. But, she was disappointed when she found out it couldn't work without voice commands. She chose a competitor's product that had options for both voice and manual controls through an app. She shared her experience with her friends.

Word spread in the Deaf and hard of hearing community about the company's lack of DHH accessibility. The company not only lost this customer but also missed a chance to tap into a large market who needed or preferred other ways to give commands.

In the end, not including accessibility in their product design led to lost sales, damaged their brand, and could have legal consequences. This story shows why it's important for businesses to make sure their products can be used by everyone.
